Five Stories of Stillness and Time

About This Collection

Embers Before Dreams is a collection of five bedtime stories for adults written in slow, reflective prose for evening reading or quiet listening. Each story follows a solitary figure moving through a world shaped by memory, time, or quiet wonder. Though the settings differ — a lighthouse, a chapel by the sea, a scholar’s terrace, an open desert, and a clockmaker’s workshop — the stories share the same atmosphere of quiet observation and emotional stillness.

Stories in This Collection

The cottage is quiet, the kettle long since cooled. He pulls on his heavy coat, fastens each wooden button slowly, and steps out into the evening air. The path to the lighthouse curves through the grass beneath a rising moon. He has walked it thousands of times — tonight he walks it knowing it will be the last.

The chapel bells have just fallen silent when the boy hears it — low and patient, rising from somewhere beneath the cliff. He sits on the shore with bare feet on cooling sand, breath falling into the rhythm of the tide. He does not move to find the source. He simply stays and listens.

The water is heated, the leaves measured, and a second cup rests on the low table before he can explain why. The scholar settles onto his cushion as the first lanterns kindle in the dusk. When he looks up, the cushion across from him is no longer empty.

The last ember collapses into itself as the caravan disappears beyond the ridge. The traveller does not follow. He lifts the brass lantern, steps away from the dying fire, and walks out into the open desert — without destination, without urgency, without anything but the night ahead.

The workshop is already ticking when the apprentice arrives in the grey light before dawn. Oil and brass, old wood, and the accumulated quiet of years spent attending to small, precise things. The master moves between the benches without hurry. There is a rhythm here that must be felt before it can be understood.

A quiet listener sits beneath the moon surrounded by five glowing books in Embers Before Dreams, symbolising five bedtime stories for adults drifting gently into the night.

The Clockmaker's Apprentice

The Clockmaker’s Apprentice

Inside the tower, minutes stretch like warm taffy, each second given space to breathe. Dust motes drift through thin shafts of light, and the clocks speak softly among themselves, marking time not as urgency, but as presence.

Tea with the Emperor's Ghost landscape scene of a scholar pouring tea for a fading emperor on a moonlit hillside terrace

Tea With the Emperor’s Ghost

Lantern light gathers along the rim of the terrace as the scholar lifts the pot for the fourth time. Across from him, the emperor’s sleeve thins where steam drifts through it. Neither speaks. The tea settles into porcelain, warm and fragrant, while the mountains darken and the stars quietly arrive.

The Keeper's Last Watch coastal lighthouse across cliffs seen from cottage window at dusk

The Keeper’s Last Watch

He had done this — sat in this chair, at this hour, in this light — for so many evenings that the motion felt older than memory. But tonight, he noticed every detail with a soft alertness, as if seeing the view for the first time and the last.

The Midnight Bakery glowing warmly at midnight on a narrow cobblestone street, with the baker working inside and a clock tower and moon in the distance.

The Midnight Bakery

Clock tower strikes twelve, and the sound drifts down through the narrow streets like water finding its way to the sea. In the old quarter, where buildings lean against one another like tired friends, the cobblestones catch the moonlight and hold it, each rounded stone a small pool of silver.

The Whale Beneath the Chapel — a quiet stone circle of smooth coastal rocks arranged on wet sand beneath a glowing cliffside chapel at dawn.

The Whale Beneath the Chapel

There is a sound beneath the chapel when the tide is low. Not quite a voice. Not quite silence. A boy returns to the shore each morning and listens. In the quiet between waves, he begins to feel that the sea remembers more than anyone has ever spoken.

The Sand Dunes of Samarkand landscape showing a lone traveller with lantern beside a moonlit desert pool and distant glowing city

The Sand Dunes of Samarkand

Moonlight rests unbroken on the pool’s surface, holding the sky as if it were memory made visible. The traveller does not speak. The lantern burns steadily at their side. Across the dunes, distant lights shimmer, neither calling nor refusing—only waiting to be seen.

The Fog that Carried Voices – mist-covered lakeside town at dawn with moored boats, warm windows and a lone traveller walking beside the water.

The Fog That Carried Voices

From the guesthouse window on the second floor, the traveller watched the fog drift across the lake like something alive, something breathing. It moved with purpose, yet without haste, rolling over the water in slow, lapping waves that seemed to pulse with their own quiet rhythm. The lake itself had disappeared…
