Four Places of Evening Stillness

About This Collection

Stillness Before Dreams is a collection of four bedtime stories for adults, set in places where the day slows towards evening. The settings include an orchard, a harbour town, a mountain village and a banyan clearing. Each story follows a single observer and one object or ritual, from afternoon into night. The themes are remembrance, shared rituals and the slow passing of time. In order, the stories are The Old Boat in the Orchard, The Bell That Rings at Dusk, The Mountain That Remembers, Tea Beneath the Banyan Tree. It is narrated by [Narrator Name] and is available as an ebook and an audiobook.

Stories in This Collection

Sunlight falls through the apple trees onto tall grass and clover, where bees work in the heat of noon. A child walks between the rows, stopping to look at a butterfly and a web beaded with dew. Beneath three trees with interwoven branches, an old rowboat rests among the roots, grey with weather and edged with moss.

Afternoon light settles over the harbour as fishing boats return and children walk home to supper. Washing moves on lines between the cottages, and the smell of bread and lavender crosses the cobbled streets. High in the stone tower hangs a bronze bell with no rope, still and waiting as the sky turns from gold to amber.

The path climbs through pines, and the sound of the last motorway fades behind the traveller. Needles crunch underfoot, resin scents the air, and a buzzard circles over the valley below. At a turn in the track, a few stone buildings appear in a hollow of rock and pine, their walls the same colour as the mountain.

Under the wide canopy of a banyan, light reaches the mossy ground in shifting patches. A visitor sets down a woven basket and unpacks a clay teapot, two small cups, a cloth of tea leaves and a spirit burner. Aerial roots hang close, and a bird calls once before the leaves return to silence.

Four quiet story symbols meet beneath the trees in Stillness Before Dreams.

The Garden of Starlight

Far above the world, where the air grows thin and the last light of evening dissolves into something softer, a garden floats in permanent stillness. Its pathways are formed from pale stone that holds its own faint glow, and its flower beds grow not from soil but from crystallised moonlight.

The Pillowmakers Garden

The sun arrived first as whisper, then as warmth, threading itself between the leaves of the old fig tree that stood sentinel beside the garden’s eastern wall. Letters From the Old Postmaster

The box had been placed with care — weathered wood, postal twine tied in knots he recognised from decades of handling. On the bottom, in faded pencil, someone had written Undelivered — 1962–1989. His own handwriting, though he had no memory of making the notation. The years struck him as curious.

The Bells That Rang Only After Sunset

The village settled into the last hour before dark, when the light thinned to the colour of weak tea. A dog somewhere near the bake house gave up barking and lay down instead. Even the hens, who had spent the afternoon arguing over nothing in particular, went in without complaint.I trimmed the opening sentence and left out the chimney smoke…
