Five Stories of Stillness and Time
About This Collection
Mirrors Before Dreams is a collection of five bedtime stories for adults written in slow, reflective prose for evening reading or quiet listening. Each story follows a solitary figure moving through a world shaped by memory, stillness, or the passage of time. Though the settings differ — a mist-filled river, an ancient forest, a lamp-lit room, a clifftop monastery, and a celestial garden — the stories share the same atmosphere of unhurried observation and quiet emotional depth.
Stories in This Collection
In the hour before the world remembers its name, paper boats emerge from the mist and move along a timeless river with the current’s own unhurried rhythm. Each vessel is folded from a letter never sent, a page of sheet music, a child’s drawing — objects that once held weight and now rest lightly on the water. The river carries them forward without urgency, past an ancient stone bridge draped in ivy, through a quiet bend where wishes settle into the depths, and on toward a dissolution so gradual it can only be felt rather than witnessed.
The path into the forest grows softer underfoot with each step, the ground thickening into moss so deep it yields to each footfall like something alive and welcoming. Between the stones and along the banks of a quiet stream, leaves have taken root that carry stories in their veins — not printed but grown, each tale tended by the forest itself with the patience of centuries. The ferns here move not with wind but with the weight of memory, and the oldest roots hold narratives too deep for words.
In a modest room lit by a single candle, a worn leather passport rests on a wooden table, its pages thick as parchment and stamped not with countries but with places that exist now only in memory. Each stamp opens a threshold: an abandoned railway platform where wildflowers grow between the sleepers, a market square where the clocktower stopped at twenty-three minutes past three, a library beside a river where dust moves slowly through columns of afternoon light. The traveller moves through each world without disturbing it, before returning to the room where the journey began.
A solitary figure follows a clifftop path downward through sea grass and wild thyme as evening light settles over an ancient monastery above the water. The gate opens onto a courtyard where three fountains murmur into granite basins and a grey cat steps between the herbs with unhurried precision. Through the hours that follow — in the scriptorium, the chapel, the cloister walk, the refectory, and the small room with its driftwood cross — the monastery reveals its rhythm: devotion expressed not in words but in the steady repetition of simple acts carried out with care.
Above the clouds, where the air tastes of honey and the horizon curves gently into starlight, a garden floats in permanent twilight among drifting formations of pearl-grey mist. The pathways are smooth underfoot and warm, the flowers luminous and unhurrying, the trees formed from crystallised light that pulses with a rhythm slower than breath. A solitary figure moves through this suspended world — across a bridge of living blossoms, past a fountain whose water rises rather than falls, into a final grove where peace has accumulated for so long it has become the nature of the air itself.
