The Inn at the Edge of the Dunes
A Quiet Refuge of Light and Sand
An Inn Among the Dunes
About This Story
The Inn at the Edge of the Dunes follows a single guest through one night at a coastal inn set among windswept dunes. Arriving at dusk, the guest is shown to a room, then moves through the building’s veranda, shoreline path, and garden conservatory before returning at dawn. The narrative unfolds without conflict, tracing rooms, corridors, and outdoor spaces in sequence. Attention rests on physical detail: weathered wood, salt air, lamplight, and the rhythms of tide and season. The piece is suited to slow reading or evening listening, offering a calm, structured account of hospitality, rest, and quiet observation across a single overnight stay.
The Threshold Between Land and Rest
Dusk settles over the dunes as a lone traveller follows the last stretch of a sand-crusted road toward a building that has stood at this edge of land for decades. The inn’s shingles hold the colour of driftwood and storm cloud, and its windows carry the warm, uneven light of oil lamps rather than electric bulbs. Each step along the path releases small clouds of fine dust that fall back to the ground, marking the traveller’s approach without hurry or sound.
The porch steps sag under years of arrivals, their boards worn into shallow grooves by countless departures and returns. A door once painted blue, now faded to the colour of sea glass, waits at the top of the steps with brass hinges turned green by salt air. It opens at the lightest touch, offering entry without a formal welcome or a keeper standing by.
Inside, the air holds layers of scent built over long use: driftwood smoke, dried sea lavender pressed between old pages, and a faint trace of honey and chamomile. A single lantern lights the front hall, casting shifting shadows across panelled walls. On a narrow table sits an open ledger, its cream pages filled with entries in many different hands, though no proprietor appears to record a new arrival.
A corridor leads on toward the guest rooms, its floorboards worn smooth by decades of footsteps. Doors line each side in shades of sage, cream, and blue, some standing ajar to reveal rocking chairs, curtained windows, and washstands set with ceramic pitchers. The fourth door on the left opens easily under a steady hand, revealing a room built around a large window of old, weathered paint.
Sea glass tones fill the window’s surface, turning the view of the dunes beyond into something closer to memory than sight. A narrow bed rests against the far wall, covered by a quilt stitched with stars and coastal birds in blue, ivory, and grey. Near the window stands a plain wooden chair beside a small table holding a single piece of translucent green sea glass.
By evening, the pull of open air proves stronger than the comfort of the room, and the corridor leads back toward a veranda that runs the full width of the building. Wicker chairs sit in loose groupings beneath a sky shifting from gold to rose to deep purple, and a path beyond the railing winds through tall grasses toward the sound of the sea. Venus rises first above the water, followed in turn by fainter stars that mark the growing dark.
Near the tide line, a single wooden chair sits half buried in sand, its arm carved with the words Rest Here in letters worn smooth by wind and weather. The traveller settles into it and watches the sea spread out in the last light, broken only by the distant flash of a diving bird. Somewhere across the water, a buoy bell marks its slow, steady rhythm, unhurried and constant.

Later, a narrow staircase leads down from the main hall to a conservatory built onto the back of the inn, its glass walls holding herb beds, a stone fountain, and a reading nook set at the far end. A plain leather book rests open on a small table there, its pages filled with handwritten notes left by earlier guests: brief accounts of sunrise, tea made from garden mint, and shells collected along the shore. The traveller adds a small sketch of the view before the book closes again for the night.
Dawn arrives gradually, the sky along the horizon shifting from black to rose to gold as the sun rises clear of the sea. Back on the veranda, the same wicker chairs receive the traveller once more, now facing a landscape transformed by daylight into browns and greens rather than silver and shadow. Birds move through the dune grass, and somewhere inside the building, floorboards creak under other guests beginning their own mornings.
By mid morning, the traveller gathers a single bag and crosses the front hall, past the still open ledger that asks for no signature on departure. The path outside leads through gardens now fully visible in daylight, herbs and flowers growing beside food plants in careful arrangement. At the point where the garden path meets the road, one last look back shows the inn settled into the ordinary business of another day, its windows catching the climbing sun.
